(1) A MESSAGE FROM THE VGP PRESIDENT AND PRESIDENT ELECT
AGU is embarking on a fund raising campaign in part because of financial concern arising from the transition to electronic publishing. The initial step is likely to be a letter from Section  Presidents asking for a donation. At least in the short term it will be possible to direct your contributions toward VGP projects. Of course this requires that we have in place projects that could benefit both VGP members and society as a whole with modest financial support. The VGP executive committee will discuss this issue at the Spring AGU meeting and we encourage you to offer your ideas for projects to either Fred or Kathy before the AGU
meeting.

Fred A Frey, President (fafrey@mit.edu)
Kathy Cashman, President Elect (cashman@oregon.uoregon.edu)

(2) CALL FOR SPECIAL SESSIONS AT FALL 2001 AGU MEETING
Please be reminded that the deadline for the submission of special sessions to the Fall AGU meeting is 25 May. Members of VGP are strongly encouraged to help guarantee the success of the 2001 Fall meeting by providing suggestions for special sessions. Sessions may be at a section, intersection of Union level.

Conference Objective:
The conference will bring together volcanologists, geophysicists and marine geoscientists with interests in the processes and significance of explosive subaqueous eruptions in seafloor settings, and in the formation of clastic volcanogenic successions on the modern seafloor and in ancient successions. The conference will foster better communication among these groups of scientists, and provide an opportunity for recent research results to be presented in a forum in which there is scope to develop new perspectives and directions for future collaborative research by interested scientists from a range of backgrounds.
Topics: Format:
The conveners are currently planning for four and a half days of presentations with a mid-meeting field trip devoted to examining seacliff exposures of early Cenozoic subaqueous surtseyan deposits. There will be morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. Posters will be put up at the beginning of the conference and remain available for viewing and discussion throughout the conference.
