(2) CALL FOR SPECIAL SESSIONS AT FALL 2001 AGU MEETING
Please be reminded that the deadline for the submission of special

(3) 2001 HESS MEDAL RECIPIENT
Congratulations are due to Al Hofmann (VGP Fellows Committee Chair), who was awarded the 2001 Harry H. Hess Medal by AGU for his outstanding contributions to the geochemistry and dynamics of the Earth's mantle. This award will be presented to Al at the Fall San Francisco meeting.
(4) UPDATE ON CHAPMAN CONFERENCE ON EXPLOSIVE SUBAQUEOUS VOLCANISM
January 21-25, 2002, Dunedin, New Zealand
Conveners:
James D. L. White, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand
Bruce F. Houghton, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii
Program Committee:
Ray Cas, Monash University, AustraliaConference Objective:
Kathy Cashman, University of Oregon, Portland, Oregon
David Clague, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing, CA
Kazuhiko Kano, Geological Survey of Japan, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan
Wulf Mueller, University of Quebec at Chicoutimi, Canada
Ian Skilling, University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS
John Smellie, British Antarctic Survey
Ken Wohletz, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM
The conference will bring together volcanologists, geophysicists and marine geoscientists with interests in the processes and significance of explosive subaqueous eruptions in seafloor settings, and in the formation of clastic volcanogenic successions on the modern seafloor and in ancient successions. The conference will foster better communication among these groups of scientists, and provide an opportunity for recent research results to be presented in a forum in which there is scope to develop new perspectives and directions for future collaborative research by interested scientists from a range of backgrounds.Topics:
The conveners are currently planning for four and a half days of presentations with a mid-meeting field trip devoted to examining seacliff exposures of early Cenozoic subaqueous surtseyan deposits. There will be morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. Posters will be put up at the beginning of the conference and remain available for viewing and discussion throughout the conference.Abstract Deadline: October 1, 2001
Travel Support: October 1, 2001
Applications are being made to several U.S. agencies to support travel of conference participants. Graduate students and young scientists will receive priority for funding. Application information can be obtained from the AGU website: www.agu.orgFurther Information:
