(1) VGP AT THE SPRING MEETING 2003 (EGS - AGU - EUG Joint Assembly)
The Spring Meeting in 2003 is a Joint
Assembly with the EGS and EUG (which organizations now have combined as
the EGU); it will be held in Nice, France, 07 - 11 April 2003.
The scientific program is available from the EGS web site (or via the AGU web site under Meetings ) at
http://www.copernicus.org/EGS/egsga/nice03/programme/overview.htm (sessions of potential interest to VGP Members are listed under VGP and under TS).
The Daly lecture by Claude Jaupart of the Laboratoire de Dynamique des
Systemes Geologiques, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris is on
Tuesday 8 April at 1930, in the Apollo room.
The deadline for pre-registration, pre-reservation of accommodation and
participation in the Exhibition is 07 March 2003 (see
http://www.copernicus.org/egsagueug/index.html)
Michael Brown, University of Maryland, Spring Mtg.Chair
(2) 2003 VGP AGU FELLOWS
Congratulations go to the following VGP members who were elected AGU Fellows in 2003.
R. Carlson (CIW)
Eiji Ito (Okayama-U, Japan)
L. Labeyrie (Orsay, France)
O. Phillips (Johns Hopkins)
B.L.K.Somayajulu (Phys. Res. Lab., India)
3) AGU MONOGRAPH WINS AWARD
AGU's Geophysical Monograph 128,
"Hawaiian Volcanoes, Deep Underwater Perspectives won the award
for 2002's best book in Geography and Earth Science by the
Professional/Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of
American Publishers. This book was edited by Takahashi, Lipman, Garcia,
Naka and Aramaki, all of whom are VGP members, and offers 25
contributions on bathymetry, the submarine geology of the Hawaiian
Islands, geochemistry and geophysics. The book also contains a very
useful CD with digital files of data, maps and images. Congrats to the
editors and the many authors for a job done well!
(4) CALL FOR VGP ARTICLES FOR EOS
Eos Editor Paul Renne encourages ideas
(and more importantly, authors) for VGP-related articles for Eos. To
volunteer, please contact him at
prenne@bgc.org
or +1 510 644 1350. Renne reports a very poor success rate in getting
book reviews, even after getting "firm" promises. Anyone who would be
interested in reviewing new books is urged to contact him.
(5) CALL FOR BOWEN AWARD NOMINATIONS
This is the first announcement that
solicits nominations for the Norman L. Bowen Award, which are due on
October 1, 2003. The award is given annually for outstanding
contributions to volcanology, geochemistry or petrology . The
contribution may be: (1) a single outstanding paper published in any
journal; (2) a series of papers which, taken together, constitute an
outstanding contribution; or (3) any other contribution that the
Selection Committee considers worthy. Special consideration is given to
nominees who have not previously received a medal.
The nomination file should include: (1) a nominating letter from a
colleague, (2) a CV for the candidate, (3) a list of publications for
the candidate, (4) three letters of recommendation (no more or less)
from colleagues that are neither from the candidate's current
institution nor from the candidate's Ph.D. institution. Nominations
should be sent to Rebecca Lange, 2534 C.C. Little Bldg, Dept. of
Geological Sciences, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1063.
(6) CALL FOR FALL MEETING SPECIAL SESSION PROPOSALS
The 2003 Fall meeting will once again
be the main meeting for the AGU in general and for the Volcanology,
Geochemistry and Petrology (VGP) section members. I think that many of
you will agree that interesting and timely special sessions
significantly enhance the quality of the Fall AGU meeting experience.
As Chair of the Fall Meeting committee I want to urge you to consider
contributing a proposal for a special session, either at the Section,
Inter-Section or Union level. You may submit your suggestions to the
AGU via your section representative (i.e., me). The deadline for
proposals is May 20, but it's not too soon to begin germinating ideas,
talking to potential co-conveners, etc. Never done it before? It's
easy, fun, and rewarding - just email me and I'll help you get started.
(7) 2002 FALL MEETING OUTSTANDING STUDENT PRESENTATIONS
There were just over 170 student
presentations at the 2002 Fall Meeting, and we made six awards for
outstanding papers. The awards will be publicized in an upcoming issue
of EOS.
Thanks goes to all those that judged the presentations.
