VGP Section Newsletter#14
Dear Colleagues,
Here is the latest issue of the VGP newsletter, packed with information on
upcoming AGU meetings. This and previous issues can be found archived
at http://VGP.AGU.org. Please address any comments or suggestions for
future issue to fagents@hawaii.edu.
In this issue:
* Special Events at the AGU Fall Meeting
* A Message From Your VGP Fall Meeting Chair
* New Book Review Directory
* Spring 2004 Joint Assembly
* 2004 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting, Hawaii
(1) SPECIAL EVENTS AT THE AGU FALL MEETING
The VGP reception will be held
on Tuesday December 9 from 6:15-7:30 pm in the Marriott Hotel. Note the change
in both time and venue from the past several years!!!! During the reception
the Bowen Award will be presented to this year's recipient. Food and
beverages will be provided (the latter again generously sponsored by GERM).
The AGU Honors Ceremony will be
held on Wednesday, December 8 at 6:30 pm in the Marriott Hotel. A reception
immediately follows the ceremony, and the banquet begins at 8:30 pm.
Among those to be honored are VGP-sponsored fellows Richard Carlson, Eiji
Ito, Owen Phillips and BLK Somayajulu.
See http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm03/fm03honors.html for full details.
(2) A MESSAGE FROM YOUR VGP FALL MEETING CHAIR
The VGP program at Fall AGU is
perhaps the largest ever, with 18 special sessions and more than 900 presentations.
Expect some differences this year at Fall AGU. The meeting will be
in the new Moscone West, across the street from the former meeting center.
Also, the oral program has been expanded - it now begins at 8 AM and continues
to 6 PM. In part because of the expanded hours, more than 40%
of the presentations at the meeting will be oral, as compared to about 30%
in 2002. For more info, see http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm03/,
and remember that the deadline for early registration is November 5.
See in you San Francisco!
Marc Hirschmann
Fall Meeting Chair
(3) NEW BOOK REVIEW DIRECTORY
The Education and Outreach committee
has started the initiative to create a directory of book reviews which will
be available on the VGP portion of the AGU website. We will restrict
ourselves to books concerning general earth sciences (like introductory text
books) and, of course, volcanology, geochemistry and petrology. We
will link to reviews where possible, but for copyright reasons we cannot
include all reviews on the website. It will depend on what publishers
allow. The directory would be especially useful for those that look for new
textbooks for a course and can easily compare textbooks this way. The directory
will be organized based on author and title.
To facilitate the start of the
list we would like to ask our members to please provide us with information
on book reviews you have done in the last two years. Also, when writing
a book review please copy VGP so we can keep the directory current.
Information can be send to vgpreview@gly.fsu.edu.

(4) THE SPRING 2004 JOINT ASSEMBLY
This assembly includes a partnership
between CGU, AGU and SEG, and is being held in Montreal, Canada [17-21May
2004 (Monday through Friday), Palais de Congres]. The Program Committee is
developing a Union-wide science program in the traditional AGU form and spirit.
In addition, sessions related to the uses or applications of the geophysical
sciences will be provided. Check the web site regularly for updates on the
science program and other meeting related activities (http://www.agu.org/meetings/sm04/).
The Program Committee will discuss the initial submissions for special sessions
at its first meeting in late October (proposals received by VGP are listed
below). Additional sessions can be accepted during the next few weeks; please
contact Mike Brown (mbrown@geol.umd.edu) for further information.
Initial list of proposed VGP Sessions:
V01 Geologic storage of carbon dioxide: from prediction to verification
V02 Compositional Variation in Metamorphic Accessory Phases: A Multi-Faceted Petrogenetic Recorder
V03 The Time Scale of Magmatism
V04 Influences on Continental Rheology in Zones of Plate Convergence
V05 Volatiles in magmatic systems
V06 Nature and Origin of Earth's Early Crust: Integration of Field Studies,
Petrology, Mantle Dynamics and Comparative Planetology
V07 From magma to pyroclasts: flow, vesiculation, solidification and fragmentation
V08 Occurrence and Origins of Small-scale Isotopic Heterogeneities in Igneous Rocks
V09 Siderophile and chalcophile elements: analysis and interpretation
V10 Ore deposits and metamorphism: their role in the study of high-grade
metamorphic terranes and in the diversification of mineral exploration
V11 Magma Reservoir Hydrothermal Circulation: Structure, Fluid Properties, Transport Processes and Evolution
V12 Magma mixing and mineral chemistry: Probing the dynamics of magma chambers and volcanic eruptions
V13 Dynamics of caldera systems
V14 Archean Geodynamic Processes
V15 Anorthosites, searching for the root of the problem
(5) WESTERN PACIFIC GEOPHYSICS MEETING - HAWAII, AUGUST 2004
I am writing on behalf of the
organizing committee for the 2004 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting to ask
your assistance in assembling a stimulating and productive meeting next summer
(Aug 16-20, 2004) in Hawaii.
The Western Pacific Geophysics
Meeting (http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp04/ ) provides an opportunity for
AGU members and members of the cosponsoring societies in the Western Pacific
region to attend a meeting similar in structure to the AGU Fall Meeting.
The program committee is made up of individuals covering all areas of geophysical
sciences. The meeting focus is on topics of interest in the western Pacific
region but does not exclude other geophysical topics. Cosponsors include
societies from Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, and Taiwan.
Hawaii, as the venue, presents
an opportunity to attract more students and scientists from North America
to participate in the meeting. The meeting is being held at the Hawaii Convention
Center, a state of the art facility. We expect to attract about 1,600 attendees
at this meeting. This will be a great meeting to plan a vacation around and
visit the other islands in Hawaii.
The two areas where your efforts would be very much appreciated at this time are to:
1. Get the word out about the meeting to your colleagues who may not know about it
2. Propose a special session on a topic of your choice. The organizing
committee particularly encourages sessions pertaining to the following topics:
* Magma-water interactions
* Geochemistry of hot spot magmas
* Subduction zone volcanism
* Volcanic aerosol and its influence on the environment
* Explosive activity: field evidence,
experimental constraints, and integrated modeling
* Hawaiian volcanism
In addition, Union sessions on
the theme: Natural Hazards in the Western Pacific Region are encouraged.
Getting involved is easy: go to
http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp04/program.shtml#sessionProposals and follow
the instructions. The deadline for submitting a special session is
Nov. 18. The small size of the meeting (compared to Fall AGU) and strategic
location of the meeting (nearly equidistant from all points on the Pacific
Rim, proximal to Pacific plateaus) should encourage thoughtful interactions,
diverse participation and broad science content. The success of the
VGP component depends on lining up a suite of stimulating sessions.
Hoping to see you in Honolulu,
Julia Hammer
US VGP representative on the program committee
