VGP Section Newsletter #28

Dear Colleagues,

Here is the May issue of the Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology section newsletter.  As always, the newsletter is archived at http://vgp.agu.org , and feedback may be directed to Sarah Fagents at fagents@hawaii.edu .

 In this issue:

 * Message from the VGP president
       - AGU Fellowship nominations
        - Other awards
        - 2007 Joint Assembly

* VGP Sessions at the 2007 Joint Assembly

(1) MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

AGU Fellowship nominations: Deadline July 15th 2007:   I have been asked several times recently whether our Section loses out in terms of AGU honors.  Here are a few numbers. At last count AGU had 48000 members of whom 8.4% had VGP primary affiliation. In terms of AGU Fellows this means we should get around four per year. In 2007 we had five and in 2006, three. If you add primary and secondary affiliations, VGP is 7.8% of 105000 which means we might expect eight total. In 2006 there were eight and in 2007, eight. Statistics of small numbers means that there can always be an extra one or two if the case is strong enough. So please give a lot of thought when nominating our colleagues. VGP Fellows committee, chaired by Ken Farley, is there to help.

Other Awards:   Where the section really doesn¹t do well is in Macelwane Medals. There could be a number of reasons for this, but field-based researchers are disadvantaged (I believe) by the 36 year cut-off age. Given that, VGP Executive Committee has decided to introduce a young scientist award for VGP members. Our proposal is currently before the Honors and Recognition Committee and I hope to report on its acceptance before too long.

2007 Joint Assembly:  The 2007 Joint Assembly is being held in Acapulco, Mexico from 22-25 May 2007 and I would like to thank Bob Bodnar and Gerardo Carrasco for putting together a great program for VGP (see below).   There will again be a VGP reception; please check the meeting program for the time and place.

Two very important items for the meeting diary:
Firstly, the Daly Lecture, not to be missed. 2007 Daly Lecture by Timothy L. Grove: Unlocking the Secrets of the Mantle Wedge: New Insights Into Melt Generation Processes in Subduction Zones Thursday at 2pm in the Juan Ruiz room.

Honors Ceremony: This will be held on Thursday 24th May. Please come to honor and celebrate with the new VGP Fellows.

---Bernie Wood , VGP President
