(1) MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Alex Halliday will take over as VGP President on 1st July 2008, so this is the last newsletter to which I will contribute. By far the most pleasing thing about the job has been the discovery that so many VGP members are willing to devote time and energy to sectional activities such as membership of our Committees. So, I will take this opportunity to thank everybody who has been involved during my 2 year tenure--- you have made my job a lot easier! Not having been US-based for 20 years, I am sure that I have missed out a lot of people, particularly younger colleagues, who would be willing to serve in some capacity. If you are in this category, please accept my apologies and please be prepared to volunteer by contacting a member of the Executive Committee.
After 4 years of trying to represent VGP interests at Council I must say that I am very happy to be giving up that part of my duties. So long as our Section remains large and active, however, we will continue to have a strong influence at Council and this requires that we remain united and avoid the temptation to split into smaller interest groups. Influence at Council is definitely dependent on section size.
If I can claim one achievement it is the establishment of the Kuno Award for young researchers. I can imagine that this will be as successful as the Bowen Award and that, carefully nurtured, it will provide impetus to the careers of those who receive it. Please nominate your young colleagues!
     ---Bernie Wood

(2) RECEPTION AT THE 2008 JOINT ASSEMBLY, FORT LAUDERDALE, FL
A reception will be held at 6.15 pm on Wednesday May 28, at the Joint Assembly, in conjunction with the Tectonophysics, Seismology, Planetary Sciences and Geodesy sections. The room has yet to be announced; see the AGU JA webpage (http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja08/) or meeting program for further details.

(3) CALL FOR VGP NOMINATIONS FOR AGU FELLOWS
Please consider nominating deserving VGP colleagues as an AGU Fellow. The award is an important recognition of scientific accomplishment. A strong slate of VGP candidates helps to showcase our research field to AGU and the outside world. For nomination instructions, see http://www.agu.org/inside/fellguides.html. A complete list of AGU Fellows is given at http://www.agu.org/inside/fellows.html. The deadline for nomination for 2009 AGU Fellows is 1 July, 2008.
---Catherine McCammon, Chair of the VGP Fellows Committee (catherine.mccammon@uni-bayreuth.de)

(4) AGU FALL MEETING, DECEMBER 15-19, 2008 CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS
It's not too early to start thinking about possible special sessions for the Fall 2008 Meeting. The call for special session proposals can be found on the AGU website (http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm08/program/program_main_SessionProposal.php).
