FROM THE VGP PRESIDENT
There are two very big issues to be aware of at this time of year namely Spring AGU and Union Medals. I will return to these in a minute. First, however, we should celebrate the brilliant achievements of the many new VGP and VGP-related AGU Fellows.
Jolly good Fellows

This is a very distinguished and large group of scientists. We should take a moment to raise a glass to them and their achievements. You can also do this in person at the Spring AGU (see below).
A great 2008 Fall AGU
Second, we should look back briefly at what was a really outstanding Fall AGU Meeting. I am extremely grateful to Janne Blichert-Toft and Paul Wallace for putting together an excellent VGP program. The science was great. Rick Carlson gave a memorable Bowen Award Lecture to a very large audience. The VGP reception also went well. Janne and Paul had worked with Brenda Weaver to arrange a much improved, in fact perfect space for the awards and it all went very smoothly with a great atmosphere. We started with the awards themselves and this seemed to work out well. Nobu Shimizu gave an illuminating overview of the life and work of his former graduate advisor Hisashi Kuno before the first Kuno Award was presented to Cin-Ty Lee, and Rick Carlson received the Bowen Award. Thanks to everybody who came along to honor their colleagues and their scientific achievements.

Harrison (UCLA) will be presenting this year’s Daly Lecture and the new Fellows (see below) will also be
honored in
2009 Union Medals – deadlines fast approaching
Finally, please note that the most important upcoming deadlines for awards are the Union Medals for which nominations must be received by March 15th. Details of how to nominate can be found at http://www.agu.org/inside/awardnom.html. These AGU-wide honors are the William Bowie Medal, James B. Macelwane Medal, Maurice Ewing Medal, John Adam Fleming Medal, Harry H. Hess Medal, Robert E. Horton Medal, Roger Revelle Medal and Inge Lehmann Medal. VGP has not been as proactive as one might like in nominating colleagues for these awards so please take the time to think about the top people in your field and get them nominated. Charlie Langmuir (langmuir@eps.harvard.edu) is in charge of the Union Medals and Awards Committee so please contact him if you have suggestions. The only Union Medal that is treated separately is the Macelwane Award for which you should contact John Eiler (eiler@gps.caltech.edu). Please note that the nominations need to go to AGU. The committees run by Charlie and John are just there to help and solicit nominations.

Finally, please remember VGP when you are thinking about earmarking money for AGU as you renew your subscriptions. It is easy to do and it means that you can directly help with the costs of improvements in what VGP does for you. It should even improve the volume of beverages available at our Fall reception.

(2) CALL FOR
2009 KUNO AWARD NOMINATIONS
Nominations for this year’s Hisashi Kuno award are sought by May 1. This a new Award given by the VGP Section for outstanding contributions to the fields of Volcanology, Geochemistry or Petrology, based on the quality of publications arising from work performed up to seven years past the receipt of the Ph.D. Awardees must be members of AGU at the time of nomination and within seven years of the award of the Ph.D. on Jan 1st of the year of the Award.
The nomination package should include (i) a nomination letter from a colleague, (ii) candidate’s CV, (iii) candidate’s list of publications, and (iv) up to three supporting letters. These documents should be submitted electronically to Jon Davidson, chair of the Kuno Award Committee at j.p.davidson@durham.ac.uk. See also http://vgp.agu.org/kuno_award.html.
The recipient of the first Kuno Award was Cin-Ty Lee in 2008.
