(1) MESSAGE FROM THE VGP PRESIDENT

Dear colleagues

There are a couple of important messages below.  The first is about putting forward proposals for AGU Fellows.  We did really well last time.  Please make the effort and nominate people.  I would urge you in particular to think about candidates outside your own country.  The second is the call for proposals for sessions for Fall AGU.  Last year the meeting was outstanding.  Of course we want to do still better this year.

In a few weeks the AGU Joint Assembly will be held in Toronto (http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja09/index.php).

Some highlights of this year’s meeting include the Daly Lecture on Monday May 25th at 1145 to be presented by Mark Harrison of UCLA.  Mark will talk on “How to Build a Habitable World (or, The Hospitable Hadean)”.

That same evening we are holding a joint Geodesy, Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism, Ocean Sciences, Seismology, Tectonophysics, and Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology Reception.  It will be in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre From 1830h to 2000h.

On the following day Tuesday, 26 May, the AGU Honors Ceremony will be held.  This will be a special opportunity to pay tribute to the 2009 AGU Fellows and 2009 Awardees.  It will be held in The Westin Harbour Castle and is followed by a reception.  Please come along and join others in recognizing the outstanding achievements of our colleagues.  It is free but you need a ticket.  As usual the Honors Banquet will be held afterwards. This also requires a ticket and will cost $55.

I very much look forward to seeing as many of you as make it.

All the best,

   Alex Halliday, VGP President

(2) CALL FOR VGP NOMINATIONS for AGU FELLOWS

Please consider nominating deserving VGP colleagues as an AGU Fellow. The award is an important recognition of scientific accomplishment, and a strong slate of VGP candidates helps to showcase our research field to AGU and the outside world. For nomination instructions, see http://www.agu.org/about/honors/fellows/fellguides.shtml, a complete list of VGP Fellows is under the Honors and Awards / AGU Fellowship tab on this site.  A list of all AGU Fellows is given at http://www.agu.org/about/honors/fellows/fellowslist/alphaall.php.

The deadline for nomination for 2010 AGU Fellows is 1 July, 2009.

Catherine McCammon, Chair of the VGP Fellows Committee (catherine.mccammon@uni-bayreuth.de)

(3) AGU FALL MEETING, DECEMBER 14-18, 2009

It's not too early to start thinking about possible special sessions for the Fall 2009 Meeting.  Special sessions are an excellent opportunity to promote interdisciplinary research, bring together workers in emerging areas of VGP, debate controversial topics, or establish the state-of-the art in VGP research areas. The session proposal deadline is June 12, and information about submitting a session proposal can be found on the AGU website:

http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm09/program/session_proposals.php

We encourage prospective session conveners to contact us to let us know of your plans.

(4) PUBLICIZING VGP CONTRIBUTIONS AT THE 2009 JOINT ASSEMBLY

The Joint Assembly takes place May 24-29 in Toronto, Canada. If you have recent interesting research that you would like to have publicized by the electronic and/or printed press, Attila Kilinc the AGU VGP Press Officer is happy to facilitate that process.  Send 10 copies of your work to Attila and he will ensure that it is placed in the press room.
