(3) NOTES FROM YOUR FALL '02 AGU PROGRAM CHAIR
A. Important Dates and Deadlines
*July 25, 2002: Abstract submission forms are expected to become active on
the AGU web site. See http://agu.org/meetings/fm02top.html.
The complete listing of special sessions will also be available at the same
location. These will also be published in the July 30, 2002 issue of
EOS.
*August 29, 2002: Deadline for receipt of abstracts submitted via mail.
*September 5, 2002 1400 UT: Deadline for submission of on-line abstracts.
USA RESIDENTS: NOTE THAT THIS IS 10 AM EDT and 7 AM PDT!
B. Expect a poster!
In 2002, AGU will have only 19 rooms available for oral presentations at
the Moscone Center, rather than the 23 it has had in previous years.
This change is owing to competing demands for space in the Moscone Center,
and is temporary, as more space will be available when the Moscone West annex
opens prior to the 2003 meeting. Also, the 2002 meeting is expected
to attract an unusually large number of Ocean Sciences contributions, as
there is no Ocean Sciences meeting this winter. The net result will
be that the ratio of poster presentations to oral talks should be at an all-time
high in 2002. The poster sessions are always well-attended, and this
year they will be a major focus of the meeting.

(4) EGS/AGU/EUG JOINT ASSEMBLY, PARIS, FRANCE, APRIL 2003
I represent VGP on the AGU Spring Program Committee. As you likely know,
next year we are working with the Europeans to hold the Spring Meeting in
France (7-11 April 2003). The deadline for Special Session Proposals for
the 2003 EGS, AGU and EUG Joint Assembly in Nice recently has been extended
to 20, September 2002. Further information is available from the EGS web
site (at http://www.copernicus.org/egsagueug/index.html),
including the provisional program (check both the VGP Program and Tectonism
and Sedimentary Processes Program for sessions that may be of interest to
VGP members). If you wish to propose an additional Special Session, use “Edit
Mode and COSIS login” at the bottom of the web page. Already the program
looks exciting, and additional proposals can only strengthen it further.
Finally, the 2004 Spring Meeting will be a Joint Meeting with the Canadian
Geophysical Union (CGU), from 17 to 21 May, 2004, in Montreal, Canada.
Mike Brown
VGP Spring Meeting Committee Chair
(5) CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR AGU FELLOWS FROM THE VGP SECTION
Award of AGU Fellowship is an important recognition of scientific accomplishment
within the AGU and to the outside world. It is also a sign of vitality of
a section within the AGU. There have been times when the VGP section was
underrepresented in the Fellowship awards, although in the most recent years
we have done quite well. The only way to continue to do justice to both our
section and its most accomplished members is to present strong nominations
to the VGP Fellows Committee. In particular, the nominations and supporting
letters should be as specific as possible about the most important scientific
accomplishments of your candidate. For nomination instructions, see
http://www.agu.org/inside/fellnom.html. For a list of all VGP fellows, see
http://www.geology.washington.edu/~agu-vgp/awards.html. The deadline for
nominations is October 1, 2002. Nominations should be sent directly
to AGU; nominations meeting AGU guidelines will be forwarded to the Section
Fellows Committees.
Nobu Shimizu
VGP Fellows Committee Chair
(6) CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR NORMAN L. BOWEN AWARD
The N. L. Bowen Award was established in 1981 by the Volcanology, Geochemistry,
and Petrology Section to recognize outstanding contributions to volcanology,
geochemistry, or petrology in the past five years. Special consideration
is given to nominees who have not previously received a medal. A list
of past recipients is included below. All that is required for a nomination
is a letter stating why the nominee deserves the award, a copy of the nominee's
CV, and supporting letters from at least two scientists who know the nominee
and support the nomination. The deadline for nominations is October 16, 2002.
Please send nomination packages to Professor Rebecca Lange, Dept of Geological
Sciences, 2534 CC Little Building, 425 E. University Ave., Ann Arbor, MI
48109-1063.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Rebecca Lange
Bowen Award Committee Chair.

(7) CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE MACELWANE AWARD
Your help is requested to recognize outstanding VGP scientists.
This medal recognizes significant contributions to the geophysical sciences
by an outstanding young scientist (less than 36 years of age). Macelwane,
the thirteenth president of AGU (1953–1956), was renowned not just for his
contributions to geophysics but also for his deep interest in teaching and
encouraging young scientists. As many as three medals may (but need not)
be given annually and up to five medals may be given annually under exceptional
circumstances on the unanimous vote of the selection committee.
At this point we need names of worthy young VGP candidates. If a person is
selected, an official nomination will be solicited. The Macelwane Medal
is a Union award. VGP may generate a nomination, but the nomination must
be submitted by individual AGU members.
A VGP nominee, John Eiler, will be recognized for the Macelwane Award this
year. Ken Farley and Erik Hauri were VGP Macelwane recipients in 2000.
I am sure you know of outstanding young scientists deserving of this career enhancing award.
Please send your recommendation with a brief summary of why you think this
person is deserving of the award to me at the address below.
Thanks for your help in this effort.
Michael Garcia (mogarcia@hawaii.edu)
VGP Macelwane Award Committee Chair
(8) 2002 AGU SPRING MEETING OUTSTANDING STUDENT PRESENTATION AWARD
Christian Holzapfel from the Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Universitaet Bayreuth,
Bayreuth, GERMANY, has won the VGP Outstanding Student Paper Award for his
presentation V52B-02 entitled: "Rates of chemical diffusion in the lower
mantle of the Earth" by Holzapfel, C, Miyajima, N , Rubie, D C, Frost, D
J, Mackwell, S, Langenhorst, F.
The 2002 Spring meeting saw 25 student presentations in VGP. This award
will also be announced in a forthcoming issue of EOS. We will start
to keep a listing of all awardees at the AGU website on the VGP page: http://VGP.AGU.org/

Education/Outreach Chair
(9) AGU’S TRANSITION TO ELECTRONIC PUBLICATION
AGU publications has seen big changes over the last 12 months, ranging from
the extremely successful establishment of G-cubed to a "not so smooth" transition
to electronic publication for all AGU journals. The AGU staff recognizes
these problems and is working hard to resolve them. In this situation
it is very important to receive constructive criticism from the readership.
The VGP publication committee solicits views and opinions of what was considered
positive and negative about the recent changes. Please rank your comments
in terms of importance and urgency and direct your comments to
Hubert Staudigel <hstaudigel@ucsd.edu>,
Chair, Publications Committee
